DiAngelo Discussion on White Fragility
In the passage White Fragility by Robin Diangelo states an argument proposing that the environment and society we live in promotes white to people sensitive on the topics such as race and how the environment makes white people feel entitled. He elaborates and provides examples and scenarios where white fragility is shown and he demonstrates that it is shown in reference to numerous topics. To demonstrate the passage states “ This insulated environment of racial privilege builds white expectations for racial comfort while at the same time lowering the ability to tolerate racial stress.” This quote interprets numerous things for instance it shows what white fragility does. White Fragility is caused by white privilege and the racial comfort of the white race at the expense of another’s race is what enhances White Fragility. To define what White Fragility is to empower his argument it states “White Fragility is a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves. These moves include the outward display of emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and leaving the stress-inducing situation.” To elaborate White people show White Fragility in numerous ways and these ways are often negative towards what triggers and draws out their white fragility. What it means to be “socially constructed” is that you are socially active towards numerous topics. For instance each socially objective field you are able to converse with them on various social topics. The passage states “White Fragility may be conceptualized as a product of the habitus, a response or “condition” produced and reproduced by the continual social and material advantages of the white structural position.” In other words White Fragility is developed as a response to the social position White people are already in.
