Composition of Two Genres

Genre 1: (Poem)

Rationale:

The purpose in developing the Black Lives Matter poem was to present to the audience the experience of being black and the racial injustice and racial discrimination we experience. In developing this form of genre what I hoped to inform the audience of not only the Black Lives Matters Movement but the purpose and reason why we support this movement and say Black Lives Matter. The audience I am speaking to are those who do not support the movement of Black Lives Matter as well as those who are racist, racially discriminate and are clueless as to why people are so passionate in supporting this movement. Developing a poem as one of my genres is a way to get the message across because this form of genre results in the audience developing a desire to interpret and seek out its true meaning. In addition the poem is a coupled rhyme poem meaning it is a two line poem that rhymes every line making it more appealing to the audience’s ear. The reason why the genre is significant to the is because the audience I am speaking to are those that make up the opposing race which is white people. Most people of this race make up the police force and in my Black Lives Matter poem in both stanza two and three contain lines speaking to the audience on how the police force treats those who are black. For instance stanza two line one states “We say “Black Lives Matter” to honor those of our race who were killed” and stanza three line six states “We say “Black Lives Matter” because we want society to stop putting us in jail” These two lines from the genre is demonstrate to the audience that society is treating us as if our lives do not matter because we often shot and killed by a white man from the police force and arrested and put in jail by a white man from the police force. I also wrote this poem with an agenda to shed light on the fact that these events actually do take place in society. In writing this poem I hoped that informing the audience of these scenarios that occur in society would influence them to not only join the Black Lives Matter movement but to also end white silence and have the audience begin to expose and speak on these events as well.

Genre 2: (Media Post)

Rationale:

The second genre is a media post developed and tweeted on twitter, the post speaks out on the two protest groups “Black Lives Matter” and All Lives Matter and their purpose of their development of their movements. The tweet states “We scream “Black Lives Matter” to protest the discrimination and injustice us African American and people of color. They scream “All Lives Matter” to protest against our protest.” The purpose of this tweet was meant to show the reasons and perspective the two protest groups have. The tweet informs the audience that the Black Lives Matter movement was created to end the problem of racial injustice and racial discrimination meanwhile the protest group All Lives Matter was a developed to protest against the things the Black Lives Matter movement were attempting to achieve. This tweet targets the audience of both parties of these two movements so that they can understand the Black Lives Matter movement was not meant to rise and gain power to be superior over other races but for all races to be equal and just in society. In addition the tweet targets those who support the “All Lives Matter” movement to indicate that they are not searching for equality among people but use this movement as a way to oppose the Black Lives Matter movement. If the All Lives Matter was truly fighting and protesting for equality then it would have been a protest developed before the Black Lives Matter movement in addition there would be no reason a Black Lives Matter movement was formed.

Reflection:

Barriers that I experienced in the first genre which is the poem were those who could not interpret the meaning behind the poem or have strong poetic analyzing skills. With the poem being a coupled rhyme if the audience and those who can’t understand or analyze the coupled rhyme poem or struggle to understand it because it is in a coupled rhyme format will not get the message and theme the poem is trying to convey. As for my second genre, those who do not have a social media on twitter or those who are not on any types or form of media to be able to see this post. This may include the elderly or the youth who are not often on the media at this age in life.

Composing genres was extremely different from my research essay because the sources I am citing are of my own creation rather than using sources developed by other people. Composing genres also allowed me to develop and present my own perspective to the audience of my choosing as opposed to using sources such as a newspaper article or magazine based on the topic of racial discrimination with the writers own perspective. I chose the genre of a poem for the audience to be drawn to this piece of writing and then generate the need to analyze it. In other words I used the genre of poem in hope to draw a large audience to the poetic piece and to interpret the meaning of the poem. The reason I chose a media post as one of my genres is because an immense amount of people use the media and with the ability to share posts the  twitter feed can reach and come in contact with a numerous number of people. In other words once again, the purpose in developing a media post was to be able to have an immense audience and also with the post open to the public people’s views and perspectives can be commented under the post as well.

Rhetorical practices I found myself using was explaining the circumstance and issues of black lives being treated wrongfully and unjust because of the color of their. I also found myself targeting specific groups of people for my audience. For instance, in my second genre, the twitter post I was speaking to the people that are apart from the movements “Black Lives Matter” as well as “All Lives Matter”.
